Growing In Unity Day #2 Sending Sympathy

Growing in Unity Day#2
Sending Sympathy

One of the hardest cards for me to ever make...sympathy. Emotions run high or rather low when forced to make a sympathy card. I say forced because that's what it can feel like; a forcing of sadness onto paper. I decided to make one to have on hand. I think we all need to do this; to have one on hand.

Girl Truly has truly been one of my go-to Unity Sentiment Kits. I stamped these gorgeous flowers three times. Each time on a different patterned Echo park paper. Tim Holtz distress sapphire ink helped create some shadow and demention. You can actually make 3 of the same cards using this technique.

These flowers are sitting at 3 different levels. One taped directly down onto the base, the second with pop dots and the third has a double layer of pop dots.

Sadly just days after creating this card to have on hand, I needed it. I was so happy to have one already and not have to pour sadness onto paper.

Do you have sympathy cards on hand? Leave a comment telling me if you do and what inspires you about this card and be entered to win 1 of 2 Unity grab bags.

  1. Yes I do have sympathy cards on hand what helps me create them is the small measure comfort another might receive through receiving one even if it’s to let them know first God is there and then me. I love this kit too thank you for sharing inspiration in a way to create sympathy cards I often feel stuck when trying to make them and sadly they are needed more often than I like to think! You created a beautiful card💜

  4. Your sympathy card is very nice. I do understand about making and knowing what to say inside this type of card. I am in a local card swapping group and we did a sympathy theme a couple of months ago so yes, I do have a couple of cards on hand.

  5. What beautiful sympathy card. We never know when we will need one or more. Last year this time was very rough for me in this area. So I do now try to keep some cards on hand.

  6. I love the paper piecing you did with this and being able to do three cards at once would be a bonus. I do keep some on hand as I usually do not feel like making them when I actually need them.

  7. We have had too many sympathy cards needed recently. I agree, nice to have them on hand so the tears don't get in the way. I do make a number of cards with no sentiment, just have to add sympathy, thinking of you, or whatever at the last minute plus something inside. Nice card.

  9. Wow! What a gorgeous card. I agree, sympathy cards are difficult to make, which is why I periodically sit down and make a number of them. Seems like I need them more often than I care to think about, so I like to have them on hand. I loved the idea of stamping the flowers on patterned paper. Thanks, once again, for the inspiration!

  10. You are so right. I do not have any on hand, but I should. It is so hard to get started making sympathy cards, but we should have some on hand. This card is so lovely. Thanks for the inspiration!

  11. I think I have one or two sympathy cards I made quite awhile ago. I've been blessed to have not needed one. I certainly don't enjoy making them. I love the color palette you used; the wood grains with the blues. That's what inspires me.

  14. Your card is lovely Jeanie and yes I do make some sympathy cards to have on hand but often depending on the recipient or the deceased I like to make a more personal one as needed to reflect the personality of the deceased. Thanks for inspiring me to paper piece flowers sometime! I've never done that!

  15. Such a beautiful card. Love the contrast of the soft colored florals on the wooden background. Thank you for sharing it. 🙂 ... I have a couple of sympathy cards on hand, but should make more.

  16. Wow I love this card. It is very fitting for a sympathy card because of the beautiful blue paper you stamped on. I is serene and peaceful. I have floral cards on hand that I haven't put a sentiment on that can be used for sympathy cards.

  18. So so beautiful. I try to keep sympathy cards in stock so that I’m not wrenched with the emotion when making one for a specific sadness.

  19. Yes, I do have about 40 sympathy cards on hand at any given time but I do sell my cards so that’s why. I find that having a wide variety makes it easier to send to people I may not otherwise send one to. For close family and friends I generally take the time to make a special one geared towards the deceased persons interests, ie: golf, farming, pets or something. I once incorporated a photo my niece had taken, of the clasped hands of her grandmother who had passed, on cards for the six grandchildren. I thought the cards turned out beautifully and the recipients loved the personalized touch. I do somewhat enjoy making beautiful sympathy cards with inspirational verses.
Your card tod is beautiful and I especially like the different levels and that you stamped on patterned paper. Thank you for another day of inspiration!

  21. Such a beautiful card! I would have never thought to paper piece those flowers. I am in my craft room working on sympathy cards. I wish it wasn't because I have a need for them. I try to keep them made up in advance, but unfortunately, it's time to replenish.

  26. Beautiful card. My next goal is to get some sympathy cards made to have on hand. They are so tough to make in the moment.

  28. I love your dimension on this card, and so cool that you get 3 cards with each stamp session. I have a few sympathy cards on hand, using them pretty quickly lately! But, I never like the ones on hand and end up making a new card most every time I need one.

  29. So beautiful!!! I am sorry that you had so recent a need for it. I try to have a few on hand too... actually I will need one this weekend for an elderly gentleman I know who just lost his wife. Fortunately my boxes of made cards are now accesable after the chaos of our move.

  31. Beautiful card...gender neutral too.
I don't have them on hand, but I should. I had one pre made, but never sent it. I think about who it's going to, and go from there. So they are a bit late most of the time :(

  32. Such a nice card. I need to get better at making cards to have on hand rather than as needed! I really like the way you paper pieced the flowers and how you layered it. Getting ideas to incorporate into my cards. Thanks!

  35. I have trouble with sympathy thinking I do not want them too fancy for a sad time. this card is so pretty and nice I love it

  36. Love your use on the Patterned paper and doing this in white really looks soft and delicate. Yes, I do try to keep one or two on hand, but should really add more since they are so often needed when inspiration is lacking.

  37. I love your sympathy card. Like you, I find making them a bittersweet experience. I love that I have been blessed with the ability and the supplies to make a beautiful, handmade sentiment for someone I love who is grieving, but I wish I were sending them a card for a happier moment. I do have a stock of sympathy cards, but generally, I try to make one tailored to the person who died or to the loved one of that person, to sort of personalize it a bit more. But it is always good to have many options. Your card is lovely!
